De maand van de lichtjes, magie!

In deze maand ben ik met vrienden en Abby op stap geweest naar alle lichtjes events in Portland. Van de Grotto, naar een hele bekende straat, verlichtende boten tot de dierentuin die verlicht is! Alles was zo mooi. De Grotto is een kerk, die elke december zijn tuin verlicht heeft, waar een koor liedjes zingt en heerlijke warme chocolade melk kan halen.

Peacocklane staat bekend om de straat die elk jaar helemaal los gaat met de decoratie! Huizen met verschillende thema's van Home alone tot Starwars of gewoon je hele huis vol met lichtjes. Ik ben met een grote groep naar Peacock lane geweest en we hebben zelfs de Kerstman ontmoet! Het was zo mooi om te zien hoe al die mensen hun huizen versierd hebben. De eerste paar dagen mag je er alleen door heen lopen, daarna mag je ook met de auto er doorheen. Voordat ik naar Peacocklane ging, ben ik samen met Maartje, Abby en haar dochter op zoek gegaan naar de kerstmannetjes. Dit is een kunstwerk, die de kunstenaar elk jaar maakt en er soort van speurtocht van maakt. Hij geeft hints op zijn instagram account en dan moet je maar zoeken. Het kunstwerk bestaat uit 400 kleine kerstmannen die allemaal op een rij zijn gezet.

Er waren ook boten met lichtjes die van stad naar stad varen in het donker zodat de boten goed te zien zijn. Dit ik keer was ik alleen met Abby en haar dochter. Het was een korte show, maar dat was maar goed ook want het was koud en het regende.

Op kerstavond ben ik samen met Dai en haar gastgezin naar Zoo lights geweest. Die avond ben ik ook blijven eten bij ze, ik heb daar voor het eerst echte krab gegeten! De poten waren super lang, want het was een king krab.  Daarna was het voor mij weer tijd om naar huis te gaan want ik moest er vroeg weer vroeg uit voor mijn reis naar Orlando!

Ik vloog op eerste kerstdag met een overstap in Las Vegas en was rond 4 uur in Orlando Florida. Daar ben ik meteen naar mijn motel gereden, op zoek gegaan naar een restaurant en daarna naar bed. De volgende dag zou ik de andere au pair ontmoeten die met mij mee zou gaan naar Disneyworld en Universal. Helaas ging haar vlucht niet en kwam ze dus niet meer. Dus ik vierde mijn vakantie alleen... Gelukkig kwam ik, tijdens mijn zoektocht naar ontbijt, een iemand tegen die ook Marvel fan was. Dus we raakte aan de praat en ze vertelde dat ze vandaag naar Universal ging. Nadat ik mijn bagage weg heb gezet in het hotel, ben ik naar Universal gegaan. Universal is verdeeld in twee parken, Island of Adventure en Universal Studios. Die dag ben ik naar de Studios gegaan. Daar ben ik in verschillende attracties geweest en heb ik heel lang rond gelopen in het Harry Potter gedeeld. Ik had mijn toverstaf meegenomen dus kon ik de spreuken uitoefenen. Daarna heb ik met Jasmine (van het ontbijt) en haar zussen afgesproken en zijn we samen verder door het park gelopen. Ik ben tot sluit gebleven. De volgende dag was het tijd voor het andere park van Universal. Helaas waren Yasemin en haar zussen naar huis. Maar ik heb wel nieuwe mensen leren kennen gedurende mijn dag daar!

De rest van de week was het tijd voor Disneyworld! Ik had dinsdag op puur geluk nog een kaartje kunnen krijgen voor Disney Hollywood studios. Dus daar begon mijn Disney reis! Ik heb in rijen gestaan voor de karakters die er rond liepen en heb in verschillende attracties gezeten. Er was zelfs een Indiana Jones stuntshow, ze lieten zien hoe ze zo film maken en het was oprecht interessant. Die dag heb ik Mickey en Minnie Mouse gezien en kreeg ik voorrang bij Sully (Monster Inc.). Verder heb ik een hele leuke en drukke dag gehad en was ik oprecht moe aan het einde van de dag. Nadat ik natuurlijk eerst Fantasmic heb gezien!

De dag daarna was het tijd voor Magic Kingdom. Ik was in LA daar al geweest, dus ik heb eerst de karakters weer ontmoet en daarna ben ik in attracties geweest die ze niet in LA hadden. Toen ik eenmaal die gehad heb, ben ik in bekende attracties geweest. Ik heb de vuurwerk show gemist, maar ipv daarvan heb ik verschillende prinsessen gezien. Assepoester heeft zelfs een lieve boodschap gefilmd voor mijn gastkinderen.

Mijn laatste Disney dag heb ik in Epcot besteed. Epcot bestaat uit verschillende landen. Elke land heeft hun eigen karakters zoals Mary Poppings (UK) of Mulan (China). Ook hebben ze verschillende drankjes en eten gebasseerd op het land. Sommige landen hebben ook een attractie, zo heeft Noorwegen een Frozen attractie. Epcot heeft ook een hele grote zilvere bal waar je naar binnen kan in een attractie over de wereld.

Mijn laatste dag in Orlando had ik niks meer gepland staan. Maar mijn vlucht ging pas om 8 uur savonds. Dus had ik besloten om eens een kijkje te nemen in het museum tegen over mijn hotel. Dit was een soort van Nemo, zo heb ik op een spijkerbed gelegen en in een achtbaan simulator gezeten. Ik denk dat ik daar ook iets van 2 a 3 uur heb rond gelopen. Helaas kreeg ik tussendoor wel een bericht dat mijn vlucht vertraagd was... Dus kon ik mijzelf nog een uur langer vermaken. Ik ben daarom maar naar een soort winkelcentrum geweest. Daar heb ik nog zo'n 2 tot 3 uur rondgelopen.

Toen was ik er wel klaar mee en ben ik maar naar het vliegveld gegaan. Helaas krijg ik tussendoor weer een bericht dat mijn vlucht nog langer vertraagd was. Omdat het oudjaarsdag was, had ik gehoopt oud en nieuw te vieren in Las Vegas. Dat was mijn tussenstop. Maar door mijn vertraging heb ik oud en nieuw in de lucht gevierd. Mijn andere vlucht zou om 7 uur gaan dus ik dacht dan kan ik nog steeds wel naar de Strip. Eenmaal geland, ging dat idee ook niet door... mijn vlucht naar Portland was geannuleerd. Omdat het 1 uur snachts was, waren er ook bijna geen werknemers. Mocht ik tot 3 uur snachts wachten totdat de servicebali open ging. Mijn vlucht was dus niet de enige, alle vluchten die in de ochtend waren van Spirit, waren geannuleerd. Dus het duurde een hele lange tijd voordat ik bij de balie was. Uiteindelijk hebben ze mijn vlucht kunnen om boeken, met helaas weer een overstap. Maar was allang blij dat ik een vlucht voor dezelfde dag had. Mijn vlucht was naar Oakland (California) en dan Portland. Eenmaal thuis heb ik hoi gezegd tegen mijn gastgezin en daarna ben ik naar boven gelopen om te slapen. Ik was kapot! Maar had wel een hele leuke vakantie gehad 😁

The month of lights, magic!

This month I went out with friends and Abby to all the lights events in Portland. From the Grotto, to a very famous street, illuminated boats to the zoo that is illuminated! Everything was so beautiful. The Grotto is a church, which lights up its garden every December, where a choir sings songs and you can get delicious hot chocolate.

Peacocklane is known for the street that goes crazy with the decoration every year! Houses with different themes from Home alone to Starwars or just your whole house full of lights. I went to Peacock lane with a large group and we even met Santa Claus! It was so beautiful to see how all those people decorated their houses. The first few days you can only walk through it, after that you can also drive through it. Before I went to Peacocklane, Maartje, Abby and her daughter went looking for Santa Clauses. This is a work of art, which the artist creates every year and makes it a sort of scavenger hunt. He gives hints on his instagram account and then you just have to search. The artwork consists of 400 little Santas all lined up.

There were also boats with lights that sail from city to city in the dark so that the boats can be clearly seen. This time I was alone with Abby and her daughter. It was a short show, but that was a good thing because it was cold and raining.

On Christmas Eve I went to Zoo lights with Dai and her host family. That evening I also had dinner with them, I ate real crab for the first time! The legs were super long because it was a king crab. After that it was time for me to go home again because I had to get up early again for my trip to Orlando!

I flew into Las Vegas on Christmas Day with a layover and was in Orlando Florida around 4pm. There I immediately drove to my motel, looked for a restaurant and then went to bed. The next day I would meet the other au pair who would come with me to Disneyworld and Universal. Unfortunately, her flight got canceled and she didn't show up at all. So I celebrated my holiday alone... Fortunately, during my search for breakfast, I met someone who was also a Marvel fan. So we got talking and she said she was going to Universal today. After I put my luggage in the hotel, I went to Universal. Universal is divided into two parks, Island of Adventure and Universal Studios. That day I went to the Studios. There I went to different attractions and walked around the Harry Potter shared for a long time. I brought my magic wand so I could cast the spells. Then I met Jasmine (from breakfast) and her sisters and we walked further through the park together. I stayed until close. The next day it was time for Universal's other park. Unfortunately, Yasemin and her sisters had gone home. But I did meet new people during my day there!

The rest of the week it was time for Disneyworld! By sheer luck I could have gotten a ticket for Disney Hollywood studios on Tuesday. So that's where my Disney journey started! I've queued for the characters walking around and been on several rides. There was even an Indiana Jones stunt show showing how they make a movie like that and it was really interesting. That day I saw Mickey and Minnie Mouse and got the right of way at Sully (Monster Inc.). Furthermore, I had a very nice and busy day and I was really tired at the end of the day. After seeing Fantasmic first, of course!

The next day it was time for Magic Kingdom. I had already been there in LA, so I first met the characters again and then I went to attractions that they didn't have in LA. Once I've had those, I've been to familiar attractions. I missed the fireworks show, but instead I saw several princesses. Cinderella even filmed a sweet message for my host children.

I spent my last Disney day at Epcot. Epcot consists of several countries. Each country has their own characters such as Mary Poppings (UK) or Mulan (China). They also have different drinks and food based on the country. Some countries also have an attraction, Norway has a Frozen attraction. Epcot also has a very large silver ball where you can enter an attraction around the world.

My last day in Orlando I had nothing planned. But my flight didn't leave until 8pm. So I decided to take a look at the museum opposite my hotel. This was a kind of Nemo, so I lay on a bed of nails and sat in a roller coaster simulator. I think I walked around there for about 2 or 3 hours. Unfortunately, I did get a message that my flight was delayed... So I could enjoy myself for another hour. That's why I only went to a kind of shopping center. I walked around there for about 2 to 3 hours.

Then I was done with it and I went to the airport. Unfortunately, I get a message in between that my flight was delayed even longer. Since it was New Year's Eve, I had hoped to celebrate New Year's Eve in Las Vegas. That was my stopover. But because of my delay, I celebrated New Year's Eve in the air. My other flight was due at 7am so I thought I could still get to the Strip. Once landed, that idea also fell through... my flight to Portland was cancelled. Because it was 1 am, there were almost no employees. If I had to wait until 3 am for the service desk to open. So my flight was not the only one, all flights that were in the morning from Spirit were cancelled. So it took me a really long time to get to the counter. In the end they were able to rebook my flight, unfortunately with another transfer. But I was glad I had a flight for the same day. My flight was to Oakland (California) and then Portland. Once home I said hi to my host family and then I went upstairs to sleep. I was exhausted! But had a very nice holiday 😁
