Zo om de velen vragen alvast te beantwoorden over het au pair zijn en worden, zal ik uitleggen hoe het programma werkt en waarom ik er aan mee doe.

Het programma waar ik aan mee doe, heet Cultural Care au pair.  Het is een programma waarbij mensen tussen de 18  en 26 jaar zich op kunnen geven om au pair te worden in Amerika. Daarnaast geeft het programma je de kans om de cultuur van de Verenigde Staten op te snuiven en jouw cultuur te delen met je gastgezin.

Ik kwam Cultural Care tegen op Facebook en ik dacht dat klinkt als een leuke uitdaging. Vanaf mijn 16de wilde ik al naar Amerika en daarnaast vind ik het leuk om met kinderen te werken, vooral het jonge kind. Dus waarom dan niet combineren. Via hun site kreeg ik meer informatie over het programma. Ze belde mij zelfs op en gaven mij meer en specifieker informatie over het programma. Ze beantwoordde ook de vragen die ik al had. Na het gesprek stuurde ze mij al die informatie ook nog eens op, zodat ik het na kon lezen, plus wat extraatjes zoals een mondkapje.

Daarna ben ik mijn profiel gaan opzetten. In dit profiel vertel je wie je bent, over je hobby’s, waarom je mee wilt doen en een heleboel vragen over je persoonlijkheid. Ook wordt je gebeld door iemand van Cultural care, ze stelt vragen over jezelf, of je ooit zo lang van huis bent geweest en ze kijken hoe goed jouw Engels is. Ook vragen ze een paar referenties over je werkervaring met kinderen en van vrienden en familie.

Zodra jouw profiel online is, is het wachten totdat een gastgezin jou een verzoek stuurt. Dat was bij mij vrij snel. Binnen een week had ik 3 verzoeken. Zodra je ze alle 3 accepteert, ben je tijdelijk offline. Je kan maar 3 gastgezinnen in de wachtrij hebben. Je stuurt ze een berichtje (of zij jou) en maakt een afspraak om een keer te gaan Facetimen. In totaal heb ik iets van 5 gastgezinnen gesproken en 7 verzoeken gehad. Als je je afvraagt maar waarom heb je die andere 2 verzoeken dan niet geaccepteerd? Dat zal ik je vertellen! Als zij je een verzoek sturen, kan je hun profiel ook zien. Je kan de foto’s bekijken en lezen wat zij in een au pair verwachten. Tijdens het lezen van die 2 profielen, merkte ik al dat ze niet bij mij pasten. En dat kan gebeuren. Gelukkig heb ik een super leuke familie gevonden, waar ik nu bij in huis woon.

Mijn gastgezin is de familie Cope, een gezin uit Portland Oregon. Ze zijn in totaal met zijn 5’en, de ouders en 3 kinderen plus een hond. De kinderen Greyson (4) en Sloane (2) gaan naar de peuterschool en ik blijf thuis met Finn (8maanden). Debby (moeder) is weer aan het werk en werkt in de zorg. Omdat zij in de zorg werkt, heeft ze recht op een NIE-visum. Je kan dit vergelijken met de mensen in Nederland die een vitaal beroep hebben, waardoor hun kinderen naar de opvang konden tijdens de Covid-lockdown. Momenteel is Alex (vader) met ouderverlof en vermaakt zich met allerlei klusjes rond het huis, hij werkt voor Facebook. Ze hebben ook een hond genaamd Zander, een Rhodesian Ridgeback, die inmiddels al 11 jaar oud is. En sinds 24 september mag ik een lid van deze familie zijn! Kan niet wachten om mijn kennis met hun te delen en van hun te leren!

So in order to answer the many questions about being and becoming an au pair, I will explain how the program works and why I participate in it.

The program I participate in is called Cultural Care au pair. It is a program where people between the ages of 18 and 26 can sign up to become an au pair in America. In addition, the program gives you the chance to soak up the culture of the United States and share your culture with your host family.

I came across Cultural Care on Facebook and thought that sounds like a fun challenge. Ever since I was 16 I wanted to come to the United States and besides that I enjoy working with children, especially the little kids. So why not combine. Through their site I got more information about the program. they even called me and gave me more and more specific information about the program. They also answered the questions I already had. After the conversation was over, they sended  me the information in paper en some little gifts like a mask.

Then I started setting up my profile. In your profile, you tell about yourself, about your hobbies, why you want to participate and a lot of questions about your personality. You will also be called by someone from Cultural care, she will ask questions about yourself, whether you have ever been away from home for that long and they will check how good your English is. They also ask for a few references about your work experience with children and from friends and family.

Once your profile is online, you have to wait for a host family to send you a request. That was pretty quick for me. Within a week I had 3 requests. Once you accept all 3, you are temporarily offline. You can only have 3 host families in the queue. You send them a message (or they you) and make an appointment to Facetime. In total I spoke to about 5 host families and had 7 requests. If you're wondering why didn't you accept those other 2 requests? I'll tell you! If they send you a request, you can also see their profile. You can view the photos and read what they expect in an au pair. While reading those 2 profiles, I noticed that they didn't suit me. And that can happen. Fortunately, I have found a super nice family, which I now live with.

My host family is the Cope family, a family from Portland Oregon. There are 5 of them in total, the parents and 3 children plus a dog. The children Greyson (4) and Sloane (2) go to preschool and I stay at home with Finn (8 months). Debby (mother) is back at work and works in healthcare. Because she works in healthcare, she is entitled to a NIE visa. You can compare this with the people in the Netherlands who have a vital profession, which allowed their children to go to shelter during the Covid lockdown. Currently Alex (father) is on parental leave and entertains with all kinds of chores around the house, he works for Facebook. They also have a dog named Zander, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, who is now 11 years old. And since September 24, I get to be a member of this family! Can't wait to share my knowledge with them and learn from them!
