New york baby!
Deze maand ging ik samen met mijn gastgezin en Bogi naar New York voor 5 dagen! Mijn gastouders hadden daar een bruiloft van een oude vriendin en Bogi en ik mochten mee. Ook om op de kinderen te passen voor een paar uurtjes, maar vooral om de stad te zien!
Maar eerst kwamen we terug van Sunriver. Voordat we die zondag thuis waren, waren we gestopt bij Mount. Hood en hebben we een picknick gehouden en in het water gespeeld. De omgeving was echt heel mooi.
Dat weekend daarna ben ik met Lis en Dai uit geweest naar een club. Eerst hebben we gepoold en daarna zijn we naar een club gegaan. Het werd een laat avondje, maar ook een beetje saai. Niet lullig tegenover de meiden, maar op een gegeven moment hebben we meer vrienden van hun ontmoet en toen spraken ze alleen maar Spaans. En dat is een ding wat ik niet kan, dus dat was lastig.
Voordat we naar New York gingen, ben ik een paar keer samen met Bogi gaan zitten om een plan te maken voor New York. Soms was Finn er ook bij dus maakte praten en plannen maken wel lastig, maar ook weer leuk. Want dan komt Finn weer aan met een appelmoes (want dat ligt op kinderen hoogte in Starbucks) en dan wordt je weer afgeleid en is het ook super schattig. Vooral als hij er zelf voor betaald. Zo gaf ik hem mijn kaart en liep hij naar de kassa om te betalen. Hij was te klein om bij de counter te kunnen, dus moest ik hem helpen. Hij was zo enthousiast hij brak bijna mijn kaart op de automaat! Maar uiteindelijk hebben Bogi en ik een plan kunnen maken. We hebben er ons niet echt aan gehouden, want alles veranderd zodra je daar bent. Maar we hebben super veel gezien.
Toen was het om te vertrekken naar New York. De vlucht was om 7 uur 's ochtends, dus moesten we er vroeg uit. Grey was zo enthousiast dat hij de hele weg naar het vliegveld vragen stelde. Hield mij wakker, dus dat was fijn! Eenmaal aangekomen in New York zijn we eerst naar ons airbnb gegaan. Vanuit daar hebben we pizza gegeten en zijn de kinderen gaan spelen in een speeltuin. Verder hebben we niet veel gedaan want we waren best moe. Vooral omdat ik tijdens de vlucht niet geslapen heb.
Donderdag hadden we een halve dag want in de avond moesten we oppassen op de kinderen, Debby en Alex hadden een feestje van het bruidspaar. Die dag zijn we met zijn alle met de metro naar Bryant park geweest. Dit park was dichtbij Timesquare dus zijn we daar ook heen gegaan. In Timesquare was er een hele grote M&M winkel, dus gingen we daarheen met het gastgezin en rond gekeken op Timesquare. Daarna zijn we naar Central Park gelopen, waar Bogi en ik onze eigen weg gingen van mijn gastgezin. We zijn naar de bekende plekken geweest, zoals de fontein en de Bethesda terras. Bekend uit films en series die daar gefilmd zijn. Voordat we terug naar het huisje moesten zijn we nog even rond gelopen in de stad zelf en hebben we wat gewinkeld. Die avond moesten we op de kinderen letten.
Vrijdag hadden we de hele dag voor ons zelf. We hebben super veel gezien en vooral gelopen. We begonnen die dag in Chelsea Market, dat is een markt in een gebouw. Het was heel mooi en groot. Naast de Chelsea Market zat Little Island, dat is een park die ze op het water hebben gebouwd, het is vrij modern, denk niet dat het heel lang bestaat. Via Little Island zijn we doorgelopen naar de High line. De High line was een metro/trein baan van vroeger, dat was de manier om vracht te vervoeren. Nadat het niet meer gebruikt werd, heeft een architect het omgebouwd tot een lang park waar mensen door heen kunnen wandelen en genieten van het uitzicht. De High line eindigt bij de Vessel, een kunstwerk wat op een bijkorf lijkt. Vroeger kon je in het kunstwerk, via de trappen, maar kennelijk is het te gevaarlijk om er af te vallen. Naast de Vessel was een groot winkelcentrum de Hudson yard (ik dacht dat dt een tuin was). Bogi en ik zijn daar door heen gelopen en rond gekeken in winkels. Daarna zijn we doorgelopen op zoek naar eten, we liepen langs Madison square garden en de flatiron gebouw. Deze was onder constructie, maar dat maakte niet uit. Na lunch zijn Bogi en ik opgesplitst, want in de buurt van de flatiron was een Harry Potter winkel! En daar wilde ik graag naar toe, Bogi vindt Harry Potter niet leuk dus die gingen winkelen. Ik voelde mij een klein kind in de Harry Potter winkel, het was zo gaaf! Nadat ik Bogi weer had gevonden, zijn we naar Central Station gelopen en naar Rockefeller Center gegaan voor een bezoekje aan de top of the Rock. Vanuit daar hadden we uitzicht over heel New York en ook nog eens een mooie zonsondergang. We waren wat vroeg dus zijn we naar St. Patricks Cathedraal gelopen, dat was dichtbij. Als laatste zijn we weer terug gegaan naar Timesquare, want ik wilde het graag in het donker nog zien. Wanneer alle lichten en billboards vol licht gaven. Daarrna hebben we nog wat gedronken met een vriend van Bogi!
Zaterdag was ook weer een halve dag, de bruiloft was die dag. Daarom hadden we kaarten besteld voor het 9/11 museum, het monument en world trade center. Het was super indrukweekend om daar door heen te lopen. Ze vertelde hoe de gebouwen in elkaar storten, hoe lang het duurde en hoe de Taliban in de vliegtuigen kwamen. Ze hadden zelfs een brandweerwagen die die dag geholpen heeft, helemaal kapot. Het was echt heel leerzaam, ik was maar 3 of 4 jaar oud toen het gebeurde, maar ik herkende het wel een beetje. Nadat we klaar waren in het museum, zijn we naar de oudste kerk van New York geweest. Daar lag ook Alexander Hamilton, een founder of Amerika. In de buurt was ook Wallstreet, dus zijn we daar naar toe gegaan en hebben we de stier standbeeld op gezocht. Vanuit World trade center hebben we de metro terug naar het huisje gepakt. Die avond moesten we weer oppassen.
Zondag was weer een dag voor ons zelf. We hebben de Brooklynn brug overgelopen. Het was erg druk, maar dat had ik ook wel verwacht. Ook hebben we de skyline van Manhattan gezien, zowel in het donker als overdag. Die van het donker was op een ander plek, genaamd DUMBO (Down under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). Daar is ook een plek die vaak voorkomt in films en series. Na de Brooklynn Bridge zijn Bogi en ik weer opgesplitst, zij ging naar een vriendin van haar toe om bij te praten en ik ben naar de Harry Potter broadway musical geweest! Harry Potter and the cursed child. Het was zoo gaaf, alles leek magie, de manier hoe ze achtergronden veranderen, sommige spreuken werkte ook echt en zelfs transformatie gebeurde op het podium. Je zag hoe ze van persoon veranderen op het podium, zo gaaf. Daarna heb ik Bogi weer opgezocht en toen zijn we naar DUMBO geweest. Waar we naar de skyline gekeken hebben en toen was het tijd om terug te gaan.
Op onze laatste dag hebben we een boottocht gedaan. De boottocht was een 2,5 uur tocht rondom Manhattan. Op die manier konden we het vrijheidsbeeld zien en ook heel veel informatie krijgen over Manhattan zelf. Ook zagen we veel nieuwe dingen die we nog niet gezien hadden. De man die vertelde deed het heel goed, had veel humor in zijn verhaal en veel informatie. Voordat we weer naar huis gingen, wilde ik eerst naar Carlos Bakery. Die was op de weg naar de metro. We hebben sommige gebakjes al in het vliegtuig opgegeten. De vlucht terug was okee, Finn lag op mijn schoot te slapen voor 4 uur, ik kon daardoor niet slapen want ik was bang dat ik hem liet vallen. Maar goed gelukkig kon ik films kijken en heb ik de vlucht overleeft.
De rest van september vloog voorbij, ik had nog een verjaardag van Dai. Eerst een verrassing diner geregeld door haar gastgezin en daarna in het weekend met vrienden, samen in haar achtertuin kletsen en spelletjes spelen en daarna naar de club. Voor haar verjaardag moest ik ballonen halen, dus ben ik samen met Finn naar de supermarkt geweest. Ook was Thijske jarig dus was ik de hele maand druk op zoek naar spullen voor haar box, die ik haar op stuurde. De rest van de maand hebben Finn en ik samen gespeeld, lekker buiten geweest en met Noah en Dai afgesproken. Ook begon Finn te fietsen door de straat, dus hebben we dat ook veel gedaan. En toen zat september er al weer op.
New york baby!
This month I went to New York with my host family and Bogi for 5 days! My host parents had an old friend's wedding there and Bogi and I were allowed to come along. Also to look after the children for a few hours, but especially to see the city!
But first we came back from Sunriver. Before we got home that Sunday, we had stopped at Mount. Hood and we had a picnic and played in the water. The area was really beautiful. T
he following weekend I went out to a club with Lis and Dai. First we played pool and then we went to a club. It was a late evening, but also a bit boring. Not to be rude to the girls, but at some point we met more of their friends and then they only spoke Spanish. And that's one thing I can't do, so that was difficult.
Before we went to New York, I sat down with Bogi a few times to make a plan for New York. Sometimes Finn was there too, so talking and making plans was difficult, but also fun. Because then Finn comes back with an applesauce (because that's at children's height in Starbucks) and then you get distracted again and it's also super cute. Especially if he pays for it himself. So I gave him my card and he walked to the register to pay. He was too small to reach the counter, so I had to help him. He was so excited he almost broke my card on the machine! But in the end, Bogi and I were able to come up with a plan. We didn't really stick to it because everything changes once you get there. But we have seen a lot.
Then it was time to leave for New York. The flight was at 7am so we had to get out early. Grey was so excited that he asked questions all the way to the airport. Kept me awake, so that was nice! Once we arrived in New York, we first went to our airbnb. From there we ate pizza and the children went to play in a playground. Other than that we didn't do much because we were pretty tired. Especially since I didn't sleep during the flight.
Thursday we had half a day because in the evening we had to watch the children, Debby and Alex had a party for the bridal couple. That day we all went to Bryant park by subway. This park was close to Timesquare so we went there too. In Timesquare there was a very big M&M store, so we went there with the host family and looked around on Timesquare. Then we walked to Central Park where Bogi and I went our separate ways from my host family. We went to the famous places, such as the fountain and the Bethesda terrace. Known from movies and series filmed there. Before we had to go back to the house, we walked around the city itself and did some shopping. That evening we had to watch the children.
Friday we had the whole day to ourselves. We have seen a lot and especially walked. We started that day in Chelsea Market, which is a market in a building. It was very nice and big. Next to the Chelsea Market was Little Island, which is a park they built on the water, it's quite modern, don't think it's been around for very long. Via Little Island we continued to the High line. The High line was a metro / train track of the past, that was the way to transport freight. After it was no longer used, an architect converted it into a long park where people can walk through and enjoy the view. The High line ends at the Vessel, a work of art that resembles a beehive. You used to be able to enter the work of art via the stairs, but apparently it is too dangerous to fall off. Next to the Vessel was a large shopping center called the Hudson yard (I thought it was a garden). Bogi and I walked through it and looked around in shops. Then we walked on looking for food, we walked past Madison square garden and the flatiron building. This one was under construction, but that didn't matter. After lunch Bogi and I split up, because near the flatiron there was a Harry Potter shop! And I wanted to go there, Bogi doesn't like Harry Potter so they went shopping. I felt like a little kid in the Harry Potter shop, it was so cool! After I found Bogi again, we walked to Central Station and went to Rockefeller Center for a visit to the top of the Rock. From there we had a view of all of New York and also a beautiful sunset. We were a bit early so we walked to St. Patricks Cathedral, which was close by. Finally we went back to Timesquare, because I wanted to see it in the dark. When all the lights and billboards were full of light. Afterwards we had a drink with a friend of Bogi!
Saturday was also half a day, the wedding was that day. That's why we ordered tickets for the 9/11 museum, the monument and world trade center. It was a super impressive weekend to walk through there. She told how the buildings collapsed, how long it took and how the Taliban got into the planes. They even had a fire truck that helped that day, completely broken. It was really educational, I was only 3 or 4 years old when it happened, but I kind of recognized it. After we finished at the museum, we went to New York's oldest church. There was also Alexander Hamilton, a founder of America. Wall Street was also nearby, so we went there and looked for the bull statue. From World trade center we took the subway back to the house. That evening we had to be careful again.
Sunday was another day for ourselves. We crossed the Brooklyn Bridge. It was very busy, but I expected that. We also saw the skyline of Manhattan, both in the dark and during the day. The one of the dark was in a different place called DUMBO (Down under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). There is also a place that often appears in films and series. After the Brooklyn Bridge Bogi and I split up again, she went to a friend of hers to catch up and I went to the Harry Potter broadway musical! Harry Potter and the cursed child. It was so cool, everything seemed like magic, the way they change backgrounds, some of the spells actually worked and even transformation happened on stage. You saw how they change persona on stage, so cool. Then I visited Bogi again and then we went to DUMBO. Where we watched the skyline and then it was time to go back.
On our last day we did a boat trip. The boat trip was a 2.5 hour trip around Manhattan. That way we could see the statue of liberty and also get a lot of information about Manhattan itself. We also saw many new things that we had not seen before. The man who told did a very good job, had a lot of humor in his story and a lot of information. Before we went back home, I wanted to go to Carlos Bakery first. It was on the way to the subway. We already ate some pastries on the plane. The flight back was okay, Finn was sleeping on my lap for 4 hours, I couldn't sleep because I was afraid I'd drop him. But luckily I was able to watch movies and I survived the flight.
The rest of September flew by, I had another birthday from Dai. First a surprise dinner arranged by her host family and then on weekends with friends, chatting and playing games together in her backyard and then going to the club. For her birthday I had to get balloons, so I went to the supermarket with Finn. It was also Thijske's birthday, so I spent the whole month looking for things for her box, which I sent to her. The rest of the month Finn and I played together, went outside and met Noah and Dai. Finn also started cycling down the street, so we did that a lot too. And then September was already over.
